Getting Started
-
Sessions are co-created and unique to each individual. We start with a conversation. This will be aligned with your goals and whatever you intend to get out of a particular session. We may reflect on recent successes, challenges, and other highlights. We will likely recap and follow up with some of the previous session, to help ensure continuity. If you did (or had intended to do) some therapeutic “homework” in between sessions, we will follow up on that. The session unfolds from there!
-
People generally start with sessions weekly or bi-weekly. Sessions may (or may not) reduce in frequency over time as a person's needs change.
-
Sessions are scheduled for one hour.
-
You should have a sense if this is a good fit by somewhere between session #1 and #3.
Most people have a sense on the first session of whether this will likely be a good fit, but some are not sure and need more time to feel it out. What's most important is whether you feel comfortable and free to be yourself, and whether what we're doing makes sense and feels right to you according to your goals.
If I’m ever not sure I'm a good fit for your needs, then I will talk with you about this and seek additional resources or offer a referral.
Over time, you will know whether you feel better and are making progress. If there is any question or doubt about this, then we should be talking about it. I can often help to mirror subtle progress… You will know if this lands for you.
I always encourage questions and feedback. This is a professional partnership, and you are ultimately the boss!

It depends!
If you are coming to work towards resolving a single “shock” trauma, then it could take just a few sessions.
If you are coming to work on issues associated with complex trauma, then it’s not uncommon for clients to work with me — or any trauma therapist — for years. You may be curious to check out this Psychology Today article.
If you are coming to work on better managing anxiety, stress, or depression, and this is not a longstanding issue, then you may be working with me for a few weeks or a few months.
I find that clients often fall into one of two camps:
Those seeking long-term support — which is not uncommon for those with complex trauma, and
Those who have a specific goal or idea of what would entail “good enough.”
In any case, we should always have challenges to process (these often repeat) or positives to celebrate… and you should feel more closely aligned with yourself when you leave!
